4 STAGES OF TREATMENT

Stage 1 - Commitment

In the first stage, there is a mutual commitment between you and your therapist to create an environment that is conducive to attaining long-lasting positive change. These sessions focus on you and your therapist getting to know each other, developing clarity on what you are hoping to get out of treatment, and a board overview of what treatment will consist of. By the end of this stage, you will be encouraged to determine whether or not you feel comfortable with your therapist and the initial therapeutic approach outlined. If either one of you does not believe that this is a “good fit,” she will attempt to refer you to other providers she thinks may be better suited to help you. If you and your therapist decide to continue working together, you will collaboratively construct a treatment plan that will guide the remaining sessions.

  • Get pre-existing questions answered

  • Provide an overview of what you are experiencing

  • Explore impact presenting concerns are having on your well-being

  • Identify previous attempts to eliminate presenting concerns

  • Disclose ideal outcomes

  • Practice self-care

  • Stay open-minded and embrace vulnerability

  • Develop a therapeutic relationship

  • Determine if therapist and her approach is a “good fit”

  • Become aware of anticipated course of treatment

Stage 2 - Process

The second stage is the most complex and intricate portion of treatment, encompassing the core of the therapeutic process and the therapeutic relationship. The therapist will be getting to know more about you than just your presenting concerns. At this point in treatment, your therapist will continue to collect information that will assist your therapist in effectively tailoring the work you and her are doing together to accurately account for your unique needs and circumstances, leading to more personalized care. A variety of therapeutic modalities and interventions may be employed to expose you to applicable tools and techniques that you can familiarize yourself with to make tremendous strides toward your goals for treatment. This stage also involves gaining insight into your inner world, lived experiences, and current challenges in order to facilitate change.

  • Reveal relevant background information

  • Elaborate upon presenting concerns and identify contributing factors

  • Assess quality of relationships and roles you fulfill

  • Establish treatment goals and objectives

  • Learn and practice coping skills

  • Exposure to tools designed to address presenting concerns

  • Uncover existing patterns and themes

  • Apply strategies to real-life situations

  • Engage in self-exploration and self-reflection

  • Develop insight and build self-awareness

Stage 3 - Change

The third stage marks the culmination and success of your active participation in treatment. You will encounter a considerable reduction in the negative consequences you are experiencing as a result of the concerns that initially led you to seek mental health services. You will be able to carry out meaningful changes to the way you think, feel, and behave that will help you manage and eliminate your presenting concern(s). The importance of execution during this stage cannot be overstated. While acquiring greater understanding and further insight are crucial, it is the translation of these revelations into practical, actionable steps that truly makes growth and change possible. Through effective execution, you are able to utilize new perspectives and ways of coping on a regular basis, leading to sustainable progress and transformation.

  • Monitor and track progress

  • Celebrate progress

  • Re-visit treatment plan and modify accordingly

  • Remain disciplined and maintain motivation to change

  • Continue gaining familiarity with utilizing new-found strategies

  • Witness positive change

  • Engage in behavioral experiments

  • Give and receive feedback

  • Build self-efficacy

  • Address resistance and decrease avoidance

Stage 4 - Termination

In the final stage, you "graduate" from treatment, signifying mutual recognition of autonomy and independence between you and your therapist. You able to grant yourself permission and agency to successfully apply what you have gotten out of treatment on your own accord. This stage focuses on reviewing the past two stages: Process and Change. Termination is a natural part of treatment. It provides you with an opportunity to discuss your growth in great detail, recognize the way(s) in which the stories you tell have transformed, pinpoint additional room for improvement within pre-established areas of concern, and come up with an action plan for integrating the work you have accomplished over the course of treatment into the next chapter of your life. This stage can ensure a smooth transition that supports you in maintaining and continuing progress post-treatment.

  • Review progress and reflect on your growth

  • Notice the evolution in how you tell your story

  • Explore unfinished work and unresolved issues

  • Develop plan for maintaining progress post-treatment

  • Elaborate upon thoughts and feelings regarding termination

  • Considerations related to the therapeutic process

  • Determine room for improvement regarding existing boundaries

  • Identify skills, tools, techniques, and strategies you will use

  • Prepare for departure

  • Say goodbye
